MARBLING

A process of decorating paper, in which the result resembles the veins of stone marble. Used in the West since the early seventeenth century. Marbling is often done by hand but machine-marbled paper has also been developed.

The example pictured is from a sheet of paper produced by Cockerell & Sons, one of the best known makers of such paper.
